Kanda Poha

I had this at my mashi's place (she lives in Navi Mumbai) for the first time and learnt it from her. She makes it really good and I liked it, as this is much different than our bengali "chirer polao", that my ma used to make. I found this marathi poha much more "chatpata" than "chirer polao"
"Kanda" means "onion" in marathi language and "poha" is "flattened rice". It's a healthy, quick and famous roadside snack in Mumbai. Here is the recipe:


Ingredients for "Kanda Poha":
  1. Flattened rice 1 and 1/2 cups (for 2 servings)
  2. Potato 1 large (chopped in small cubes)
  3. Onion 1 large (chopped finely)
  4. Curry leaves 6-8
  5. Green chilli 1 or 2 according to taste
  6. Chopped coriander leaves 2 table spoon
  7. Lime/ lemon wedges 
  8. Peanuts 1 handful
  9. Mustard seeds 1/2 tea spoon
  10. Turmeric powder few pinch
  11. Salt according to taste
  12. Sugar 1/2 tea spoon (optional)
  13. Oil 2 table spoon
  14. Sev 2-3 tea spoon (I didn't have it)
How to prepare "Kanda Poha":
  • Wash poha and drain the water. Keep poha on a strainer, so water is drained properly.
  • Heat oil in a pan and fry peanuts. Take peanuts out from oil and keep separately.
  • Add mustard seeds and curry leaves to remaining oil. Give it couple of stirs and add chopped onion. Saut√© onion until pink and soft.
  • Add potato cubes along with salt, sugar and turmeric powder. Cook covered on low heat, until potato is soft.
  • Add poha and mix well with other spices. Cook for more 2-3 minute over low heat and turn off the heat.
  • Transfer to plates. Sprinkle lime juice and add chopped coriander leaves. Also you can add sev while serving.

  1. My all time favorite! U r right in saying the Maharashtrian version is more 'chatpata' than the Bengali version. However, I love both! Thanks for the recipe.
