Dimer Jhol/Dalna or whatever!!

Sometimes it's maddening to have a terribly "Bong" husband at home. Any time you ask him, what to cook for lunch or dinner and you will get the same answer. Either it would be "anything you like" (which means "anything of my choice"!!) or "may be macher jhol or dimer jhol or murgir jhol" !! Sometimes I go mad of making these "jhol" almost regularly! But he never gets bored eating them!! A "jhol" is, Bengali style curry, runny in consistency and it must have potato in it. I am not denying the fact, that I love them too. But not like him!
However..I am sharing my recipe for "dimer jhol/dalna" (Bengali style egg curry with potato).

Ingredients for "Dimer Jhol/Dalna":

  1. Hard boiled egg 4 pieces
  2. Potato 2 large (cut into quarters)
  3. Tomato 1 large (chopped)
  4. Onion 1 large (chopped)
  5. Ginger paste 1 and 1/2 tea spoon
  6. Garlic paste 1 tea spoon
  7. Chilli paste 1 tea spoon (or according to your taste)
  8. Coriander & cumin powder 1 tea spoon each
  9. Kashmiri red chilli powder 1/2 tea spoon
  10. Turmeric powder 
  11. Dry red chilli 1
  12. Cumin seed 1/2 tea spoon
  13. Salt & sugar according to your taste 
  14. Oil to cook
How to prepare "Dimer Jhol/Dalna":
  • Peel the eggs and make slits on them. Marinate eggs and potatoes with bit of salt, turmeric powder and red chilli powder. 
  • Heat oil in a pan and fry eggs to golden and keep separately. Fry potato until they are golden and tender. Take out from oil and keep aside.
  • Add dry red chilli and cumin seed. Add onion on getting aroma. Fry till onion is lightly brown in color. Now add ginger-garlic-chilli paste and cook over high heat, until raw smell is gone and oil starts separating. Add cumin-coriander powder, chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt. Cook for 2 minutes more.
  • Add tomato and cook until raw smell is gone and oil is separated from spices.
  • Now add potato and cook covered over low heat for some times. Then add water (According to the consistency you would like to have of your gravy. ). I added 1 cup and little more. Bring it to boil. And shimmer covered for 2-3 minutes. Add eggs and shimmer for more 3-4 minutes.
  • Your "dimer jhol/dalna" is ready to serve. Enjoy it best with plain steamed rice :)
