My Mom's Deshi Cheese Cake

Woke up in the morning with a craving for those "Deshi" cheese cakes Maa used to make. It is not exactly cheese cake but tastes something like that. Though it's made with Chana/cottage cheese but not the 'chanar cake" or "chena poda". It is different. And I never found this recipe anywhere else.
      So the next step is to call maa really early in the morning without caring about time, wake her up and ask for the recipe. Errrrrr...I know it's weird..:P
   The good thing is I didn't have to run to supermarket for buying ingredients, as they are really simple and most people will find them available in their pantry.


Ingredients for "My Mom's Deshi Cheese Cake":

  1. Whole milk/full cream milk 2 ltr
  2. Vinegar 3-4 table spoon
  3. Plain white bread 4 slices (remove sides, soak in water and squeeze them carefully)
  4. Butter 80 gm
  5. Sugar 1 cup ( add little more if you like)
  6. Eggs 2 large
  7. Baking Powder 1/2 tea spoon
  8. Vanilla extract 1 tea spoon
  9. Cashew nuts 1 handful (broken)
  10. Raisins 1 handful

How to make Cake:
  • First step is to prepare the most important ingredient- Cottage cheese/ chana. For that take a large deep bottomed pan. Pour milk in it and bring it to boil. Now add vinegar and reduce the heat to low. It will curdle the milk and make chana/ cottage cheese. Shimmer for 30 seconds in low and turn off the heat. Leave it for 4-5 minutes and then stain on a muslin cloth. And put some weight on it to squeeze out the water completely. But it should not be very much dry.

  • Now take soaked and squeezed bread slices and knead them on a clean and flat surface to smooth (lump free).
  • Knead chana to smooth, creamy and shiny in texture. Use your palms.
  • Now mix bread and chana together. Keep it covered.
  • Take butter and sugar in a separate bowl. Whisk it to light and fluffy.
  • Add chana to butter and sugar mixture. Mix it to smooth using hand/palm (mix it till sugar is completely melted and there is absolutely no lumps). Add baking powder and mix it really well.



  • Now add eggs and mix again. Add vanilla extract. Now you will get the cake-like consistency of the batter. Lastly  mix with cashew nuts and raisins.
  • Grease your baking pan generously with butter. Pour the cake batter into baking pan.

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C for 10-15 minutes.
  • Put your baking pan on middle rack of oven. Bake it at 180°C for 25-30 minutes. Your cake will rise like any normal cake and colour will change to golden brown.
  • Reduce temperature to 160°C and bake for another 20-25 minutes or until it's done. (Insert a skewer to check if it is done.)
  • Lastly bake it at 170°C for another 3-4 minutes for a better surface colour. Switch off the oven. And let your cake rest inside hot oven for another 10 minute.
  • Take it out and let it cool down. And shift to wire-rack.

  • Make slices with a sharp knife once it is completely cooled. 
 And enjoy..:)
