Silky shrimp or cream shrimp...

Ate this dish at Paromita di's (my neighbour) place once and liked it. Obviously asked her for recipe. She calls this dish as cream shrimp. Speciality of this dish is it's, smoothness. It melts in mouth just like a piece of cream. And it's texture is amazingly silky. This is not a spicy dish but very rich in flavour.

I loved the kind of flavours and ingredients are used in this dish. Like fenugreek for flavour..quite unique I must say.


  1. Medium size shrimp (deveined, deshelled and cleaned) approx 300-350 gm (20-22 pieces)
  2. Onion 3 medium size (minced or finely chopped)
  3. Ginger paste 1/2 tea spoon
  4. Garlic paste 1/2 tea spoon
  5. Fenugreek powder 1/2 tea spoon or little more
  6. Chilli flakes 1/2 tea spoon 
  7. Garam mashala powder 1/2 tea spoon
  8. Salt to taste
  9. Cream 1 cup
  10. Water 1/4 cup or little more
  11. Butter or white oil 2 table spoon

  • Marinate shrimps with little salt and keep aside.
  • Heat oil/butter in a non-stick pan and add onion to it. Fry over medium to low heat till the onion is soft  and the moisture from onion dries. But don't let it get brown, as we want  a very soft color.
  • Add ginger & garlic paste and give it few good stir. Add fenugreek powder, garam masala powder and chilli flakes and salt accordingly. 
  • Add marinated shrimps and mix it with spices over medium heat. Carefull not to let the gravy stick at the bottom.
  • Add cream with little water and shimmer it covered for few minutes over low heat.
  • Lastly increase the heat to medium-high and stir it continuously till moisture evaporates and fat separates at the edges ,leaving a smooth thick gravy. But don't let it be dry. 
  • Turn off heat and cover it with a lid. Give it 3-4 minutes standing time before serving.
