Shim Bhapa (Steamed Flat Beans with Poppy Seed and Mustard Gravy)

Shim (flat beans) Bhapa (steamed) is an authentic bengali delicacy...My mom used to make it using a pressure cooker. But not in direct heat. She used to put the whole thing in a closed aluminium/still tiffin box and keep it aside. Now what she used to do is..boil some water in a pressure cooker and place the tiffin box inside it care fully and cover the cooker and let it cook. But as it is a complicated process I cook it in microwave...though it tastes same but I miss the magic of my mom's hand..:)

  1. Shim/flat beans 200 gm ( cut the beans in half if very big in size)
  2. 1 and half cup mustard paste and poppy seed paste with 1 or 2 green chili (1:1 ratio)
  3. 1 table spoon unsweetened yogurt
  4. fresh chili 2 piece
  5. salt, mustard oil (as required) and turmeric powder(little bit),sugar (little bit)

  1. Mix the paste of spices with yogurt ,salt, turmeric powder and 2 table spoon mustard oil in a microwave safe bowl.
  2. Mix the flat beans with this mixture. Cover it with a lid.
  3. Set the microwave temperature at "low". And micro it for 7 minutes.Check if the beans are tender and done. If not , micro it for 5 more minutes in "medium" temperature.
  4. Add quarter spoon sugar and give it few minutes standing time.
Serve with plain steamed rice.
