Healthy & Tasty Chicken Stew

Chicken "ishtu/ishtoo" or bengali version of stew is really simple healthy and tasty. This is a dish you will love when dieting...when you are feeling feverish ....when you are in hurry or when going back to the memory-lane of your childhood. 



Ingredients for Chicken Stew:
  1. Chicken 500 gm (cut into medium pieces) skinned,washed and pat dried
  2. Carrot 2  (cut into large chunks)
  3. Raw Papaya 1/4th portion..(cut into large chunks)
  4. Beans 8/10 (cut into large pieces)
  5. Bell pepper (cut into large cubes) (optional)
  6. Half cup frozen green peas
  7. Snow peas 8-10 (if not using peas)
  8. Potato 1 medium size (cut into 4 pieces) (optional...normally I skip it)
  9. Tomato 1 large (cut into quarters )
  10. Onion 2 medium size  (cut into cubes)
  11. Garlic 4/6 cloves (sliced)
  12. Ginger 1/2 inch (sliced)
  13. Green chili 3 pieces
  14. Cilantro 2 table spoon (chopped )
  15. Half crushed black pepper 1 tea spoon 
  16. Bay leaf , green cardamom, cinnamon stick, clove,whole pepper corn
  17. White oil 2 teaspoon (But I prefer using butter)
  18. Salt & sugar according to taste
  19. Turmeric powder 1 or 2 pinches
  20. Lime juice 1 or 2 table spoon


How to prepare Chicken Stew:


  1. Heat oil/butter in a pressure cooker. And temper with 1 tea spoon half crushed black pepper, 1 bay leaf and 1 green cardamom . Fry for few seconds.
  2. Add garlic next..sauté for few seconds.
  3. Add chicken and vegetables except bell pepper, green peas and cilantro. I add all together.
  4. Add salt ,sugar, turmeric (very little).
  5. Add enough water (3 cups or as required).
  6. Cover and cook for 15 min in low flame.Let the vapor come out completely and open the cooker. [Or you can opt for 3 whistles over medium heat. And wait until steam comes out completely.]
  7. Now add bell pepper and peas and cook for 5 min more.And turn off the gas.
  8. Lastly add cilantro and lime juice.
  9. Serve with toasted bread...:-)
